Something To Think About

Fathers, like it or not, what our children see in and learn from us will have a great impact as to how they will view our Father in Heaven. While it is possible for children to come to trust God with their lives even if they have had a rotten or nonexistent father, we can make the road to faith a lot easier.
When I think about what kind of father I want to be, several examples come to mind, but I will only highlight two.
First, my father – Dad – who has modeled for me what it means to be a good husband and to trust God. Dad has shown me what it means to love a wife without expecting anything in return, especially through the years when my mother’s health was so poor. I can also give many examples from my childhood of how Dad trusted God to care for us even when the money was gone and the cupboards were bare. He faithfully gave to the church even when it did not makes sense to do so; God always came through. What valuable lessons I learned from my dad.
The second person that comes to mind is the Apostle Paul. In many ways, Paul was a father to all he reached with the Gospel. I often ask myself if I am bold enough to say, as did he, “imitate me as I imitate Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1)” or “whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me, put it into practice (Philippians 4:9).” Fathers, dare we say those things to our children? What would the outcome be?
